I've played Petroff and 3.Bc4 is played often in blitz games. In my experience if black tries to hold that extra pawn he is in trouble so I usually give it back (playing ..d6 and ..f6 gives white a good attack like in the games you showed).
To my mind the best reply is 4..Nc6!? (1.e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3.Bc4 Nxe4 4.Nc3 Nc6). Usually game continues 5.Nxe4 d5 6.Bxd5 Qxd5 (6.Bd3 dxe4 7.Bxe4 is better but most people don't play it). Black tries to play Bg5 and 0-0-0.

Thanks for post. I am finding your posts on Finnish players interesting. My grandparents imigrated to the US from Finland in the 20's.They came from Tampere and Turku.(sp)

I suppose a move's being "coffee house" is derogatory. But I've played that line and beaten A players OTB with it. It may be coffee house (though I find the term "coffee house" vague), but who cares if it gets the job done. Sure, you probably can't play that stuff after you've reached Expert, but in the meantime, moves like 3. Bc4 lend themselves to tactics.
Best of luck to ya.

I don't know whether or not its"coffee house", but I think the consensus is White has slightly better options. Clearly it's still anybody's game.

Lasker gets clobbered in this game. I'm not sure why Harlaub lost the game, his position is great. He could have continued 10. Re1+ with, according to Rybka, huge advantage to white.
