New Toys to come

Just purchased Dan Heisman Chessbase Cd on the Traxler Attack. This probably won't
improve my chess but I know I will have alot of fun using it. I also will get the Burgess book on the Smith-Mora Gambit from Ebay. I will play that line more often than the Traxler and look forward to getting it.

Here is a screenshot from a recent game. I think as black,if I am able to open up the position I might have some tactics. What do you think? I ran Fritz on it last night but it died midcalculation.black to move

Another Reason why I love the Traxler

I appears the Traxler is the only line I have a true fighting chance against players rated 100-300 points higher than me. This player is 1690. Note on playchess I took a significant drop in ratings went from a extremely brief stint at 1600+ down to under 1400 now slowly crawling back to 1520. If only I can get more players playing the agressive N-g5 line as white.

TRAXLER!

A nice traxler win as black against a 1800 player on playchess . White takes with the Bishop which I feel is the better option

Another book on Tactics

I recently recieved a book from Interlibrary loan called Mastering Tactical Ideas by IM Nickolay Minev. This is a collection of articles from his Inside Chess columns called Tactics, tactics and more tactics. Each article has a tactical theme ie: kamikaze pawns, two horsepower mates, lineal mates, Quiet moves before tactical combinations. The chapter gives 6-7 annotated games that are examples of that theme. This is somewhat in the spirit of Chernev most Instructives games.

I have partially built a collection is chessgames.com of these games.

New Year Tournament

I played down in Boston at the Boylston Chess Club and had a great time. I enjoyed meeting DG who writes the prolific chess blog as well as others out to celebrate the New year playing chess. There were only two categories: Open and Rated and each had high ranking players mixed in with the lower levels.

I went 1-3 in the rated section and except for blundering away my queen in the third game, I was happy with my games. I felt the first two players I played were of better caliber than the ones I faced in my first tournament. I recently started to play the Smith-Morra Gambit and had a chance to play it in my first game.

Mike had some constructive things to say about my play about the Smith-Morra Gambit
and what is normally considered to be the move order and graciously put them in an email to me. I haven't fully studied his comments yet so I will leave them out of this post for now. Note on move 34 I am playing hope chess and would like to put my Queen on the back row check of course that did not work.
